Everything a testee needs to learn to test well

First off, a disclaimer. As a tester, I look for certain things in a testee. These things may or may not be as important to each tester, but for the most part, all of this information is vital to a new testee wanting to make a big impression, as well as a returning testee, hoping to advance in dorms.

1. Use 40 card decks. Period.

Competitive play teaches us that some decks that generate heavy card advantage can benefit from exceeding the 40 card minimum, but for the most part, any deck will be more likely to do well when as slim as possible. You shouldn't be worried about decking out in a test environment because mill style decks aren't allowed.

2. Stay away from battle traps that don't function as removal.

While the goal of a duel is to reduce your opponent's life points to zero, card economics is crucial to a player's survivability. You should be focused on making plays that give you as much field presence as possible and generate hand advantage as well, so you can respond when and if your field presence is disrupted. Magic Cylinder, used right, can end a duel in your favor, but does nothing to promote hand advantage or field advantage. The opponent's monster is still there, still a threat.

3. 2 is the magic number for extra deck cards.

Simple enough really. You have 15 slots for extra deck. Don't use more than 2 of the same card. The extra deck is there to give you additional outs to your opponent's field presence. Having less than 15 cards in your extra deck, or not enough variety in your extra deck will lead to getting trapped as you play through the various metas out there. Any tester will dock you points for having a poorly-constructed extra deck.

4. Spend time fine-tuning your side deck against the meta.

It's a clear fact that some decks are just dominant. Your side deck should have a plethora of options to handle the most dominant meta decks. Don't get too bent about your deck's engine; your main and extra deck should be all of the engine you need. If your side deck card reinforces your main deck's engine, you should probably consider swapping it with a card in your main deck that does not.

5. This is an academy. We will make our testing dynamic to keep testees on their toes.

Right now, we are using the official konami ban/restrict list, but in the future, we may change to a custom ban list, to make players adapt. Always read the testing guide carefully before you begin a test, make sure your deck is in order with accordance to our current ban list. It is your responsibility to make sure your deck is testing-legal, and it is at the teacher's discretion whether or not to cut you a break should you make a mistake. We award attention to detail!

6. Make sure your deck has a clearly defined engine.

This is the most important part of deck building, and one that most people get hung up on. Your main deck should be comprised of roughly 60-70% engine, 20% protection, and 10% recursion. If there's a remainder, it should be used for counter-meta plays. This is rare, and your choice in this matter is crucial, as you want to hit roughly 80% or more of the meta with your choice. Example: An inzektor deck running Beetron and Imperial Iron Wall in the main deck. Iron Wall hurts a large portion of the meta, which rely on grave control. Preventing banishing will shut down some effects, and can even make key cards impossible to summon. Conversely, Beetron allows you to use the Iron Wall as food to summon another monster, effectively eliminating any weakness your deck might have to Iron Wall.
For non-combo reliant decks, it's best to avoid battle traps because they usually get picked off during the main phase, or the opponent summons monsters with immunity. While cards like Dimensional Prison and Mirror Force are good for punishing overextension and giving you massive bonuses, they are more likely to sit in your backrow and not be triggered. Try to predict what your opponent will do during their turn, and what order they will make each move, and set backrow that allows you to respond at each step without losing card advantage.

7. Extra deck cards that enhance your engine should be run at 2. The rest should be at 1 each.

This rule of thumb helps you maximize the different variety of responses you can have for any given situation, while allowing you to still build faster card advantage. If you're using a card to handle a threat and it fails twice, you need to think about approaching the situation differently.

8. Chat with your tester, stay active in main chat.

This goes without saying. Chatting with your tester, asking questions and staying active in main chat will give you opportunity to see what works in a test. You can always learn something new, and testers are always learning about their testees, even learning from others to improve the quality of their testing. We here at RDA try to foster a positive, friendly environment geared towards mutual learning. Don't ever think that a player is not valuable just because they scored low on a test, they may crush you in battle because they've been studying and dueling with the teachers since their last test, learning and improving. Don't take a dorm too seriously, because it's only the result of that moment, and doesn't measure skill level so much as place skill level. You have just as much to learn from a Kuriboh Brown student as you can from a Horakhty Gold student.

9. Own your results.

The results of the testing are based on a biased point system. While we try our best to make it as fair as possible, the results are still at the discretion of the teacher administering the test. There's no cut and dry way to reach a point value, everyone has a different perspective. It's best to just listen to the teacher's explanation, if questions are unanswered, make sure you address them, and move on from there. Any discrepancies in testing should be reported to the head admin, RsS.YuGi, but feel free to make an appeal to myself or any other tester if you feel your results were unfair.

10. Have fun.

This isn't a life or death struggle. If you lose, you play again until you win, learning and adjusting your strategy as you go. If you win, you gloat about it and then you get put to the test to see if you can keep it up. Albert Einstein said it best: "Losing is a temporary state. It cannot continue indefinitely unless you give up and let it happen." Don't take losing seriously. Everyone here is playing to win, competitive or not, and the reality is, only one can win in a 1 on 1 game. Work hard to ensure that's YOU.

2 of a given card in the Extra Deck isn't always a given. There are decks in which it's optimal to max on something, like 3 Gear Gigant X in Geargia. Otherwise, nicely-written, hopefully it'll help people.

Glad you guys liked it. I strive more than anything for my peer's approval (slight sarcasm). On a real note, I definitely hope it helps our future generation of students to be successful.
